Attacks on Gulf Infrastructure and the Global Oil Market

The Guardian (March 11th,2026)

The Middle East plays a crucial role in the global energy system because many of the world’s largest oil producers are located there. Recently, the region has experienced a dramatic escalation in conflict after Iran launched attacks on infrastructure and transport networks across the Persian Gulf. These attacks targeted important facilities such as airports, commercial ships, and oil infrastructure in several countries.

The attacks came during a broader war involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. In response to earlier strikes against Iran, Iranian forces and allied groups launched missiles and drones at targets across the region. Some attacks targeted ships traveling through the Persian Gulf and near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important shipping routes for oil in the world.

This escalation has raised concerns about global energy security. If shipping through the Strait of Hormuz becomes too dangerous, oil exports from several Middle Eastern countries could be severely reduced. Because a large percentage of the world’s oil passes through this narrow waterway, even small disruptions can lead to significant increases in global oil prices.

This event highlights several important IB Global Politics concepts, particularly interdependence, power, and security. The concept of interdependence is clear because countries around the world rely on oil from the Middle East. When conflict disrupts oil supply, the effects can be felt globally through higher fuel prices, economic instability, and inflation.

The concept of power is also important. Control over energy resources gives countries significant influence in global politics. Iran’s ability to disrupt shipping routes demonstrates how states can use strategic locations to exert pressure on the international system. Even if a country does not have the strongest military, it can still affect global politics by targeting important economic infrastructure.

Another key concept is security. Traditionally, security refers to protecting a country from military threats. However, in global politics today, security also includes energy security, which means ensuring stable access to energy supplies. When oil routes are threatened, governments around the world become concerned about economic stability and national security.

Finally, the situation illustrates the role of alliances and regional politics. Gulf states such as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have had to intercept drones and protect their oil infrastructure. This has strengthened their cooperation with Western allies such as the United States.

Overall, this case study shows how conflicts in the Middle East can influence global politics through energy markets, strategic trade routes, and international alliances. It demonstrates that regional instability can quickly become a global economic and political issue.
