The conflict in Yemen has been going on since 2014. What was initially a civil war between the government and the Houthi rebel group shifted into a regional war with involvement from Saudi Arabia and the UAE. I understand the thought process of Saudi Arabia and the UAE and their wanting to get involved to help stop the rebels, but their bombings and raids have just amplified the civilian losses throughout the country. I believe that the outside countries were only concerned about regaining the territory taken by the rebels to actually focus on the effect of their raids on the actual population.
However, the article that I read is talking about the Saudi-UAE military alliance opening up to help solve the humanitarian issues that they helped enhance. I am really glad that there is a chance that they are finally going to help all the people suffering, but I still think that they should’ve aided sooner since they have been involved in Yemen since 2015. The conditions in Yemen have only gotten worse with outside involvement now with millions of civilians starving. I believe that there should have been intervention that included helping with the humanitarian issues when the Saudi-UAE alliance first got involved.
The article also mentions how the UN is hesitant to respond to the Saudi-UAE request for aid and supplies in order for them to help. I honestly don’t fully understand all the issues that UN has with certain countries around the world, but I do believe it is necessary to help with cases like what is happening in Yemen. Innocent people are suffering from a war that they don’t need to have any part in and I believe that the UN should provide aid to those civilians without hesitation. In my opinion, I think this should be a mentality worldwide because if we extend help to those in need we would most likely receive aid in return if necessary. The world is only going to be stable if we look out for each other as well as ourselves.
