Since China’s treatment of Muslim’s in the past year, they have recieved much criticism worldwide. In a recent update, China’s ambassador was called to speak with Turkey after China’s ambassador for Turkey claimed that he had the right to respond to criticism about China’s treatment of Uighur Muslims, bringing up Turkey had issued violent statements in the past.

The Uighur minority is made up of mostly Muslim people speaking Turkish, and China has come under scruitiny for their mistreatment, but denies all allegations. The UN estimates at least a million Uighurs, as well as other sects, held in detention centers in northwest China’s Xinjiang. China’s foreign minister made a statement in Turkey saying “We hope that people in Turkey from all walks of life can correctly, rationally, and objectively view the firm position of China to protect its national sovereignty and territorial integrity” as protestors gathered outside.

I believe that this is a most tricky situation, hopefully other world powers or the UN can act to help the Muslim minorities in China with release from these detention centers, but China’s dispositoin on this topic is that of protecting their sovereignty, so acts like this may cause China to lash out in response to any interference. I hope that world powers can tread lightly on this in order to assist the Uighur and other muslim sects without incurring any outlash from China. Perhaps more information will come to light about the detention centers which will force other countries to act to aid, in the meantime, it looks like surrounding countries and world leaders will be forced to stay hands off on the matter because of China’s position on protecting their sovereignty.
