Further meetings among various world leaders have been taking place at the United Nations, and there is no shortage of diplomacy out of the Middle East. The respective monarchs of both Jordan and Saudi Arabia issued policy firstly on the situation in The Holy Land, and Saudi Arabia stated their positions on Iran. Both kings explained in speeches that the only way for there to be peace in that region is for there to be a strong two-state solution that is upheld and explained the horror they felt after the recent slew of fighting between Israel and specifically Gaza. Saudi Arabian King Abdulaziz then went on to say that while tensions have been high between them and their Shiite rival, Iran, they want to have cautious diplomacy, reiterating their opposition to Iran becoming a nuclear power nonetheless. I do not believe this will have massive implications on changing any situation in the region. Considering the religious context, these Arab nations have always been ardent supporters of Palestine and unless there is direct action from them, this is merely a continuation of policy for many decades. This does however seem like a crystallization of outlook in the Middle East that seems to show the Trump Administration attempts at creating diplomacy between Israel and many Arab states and undoing that, seem to have not been very effective. The situation between Saudi Arabia is also not shocking to many considering their unique positions of power in the region together, and their opposite stances on the US. Similar to what is discussed in IR, this a very good example of bipolarity in the region, with aside from Turkey to the north, Saudi Arabia and Iran are the clear dual superpowers in this region. The situation with Jordan and Saudi Arabia working together at the UN is an example of multilateral cooperation, in this case on religious grounds, for the hope of reaching an outcome they both want. Finally, “Realpolitk” has been definitely shown by the Arab nations at the UN these past few days. When the opportunity arises for the leaders of nations to come together, uses the opportunity to advance the agenda of their citizens and protect their interests. This also shows Realpolitk in the respect that all that was being accomplished at the UN by Jordan and Saudi Arabia was based in conflict that continually exists. One of those is the religious conflict of people, some of which last thousands of years, between Jews and Muslims and Shiites and Sunnis, and the never ending nature of political conflict when there are two equal powers.
