Israel Prime Minister Naftali Bennet said that Israel is worried Iran will have sanction relief, despite not halting its nuclear program sufficiently. Israel’s worries are because of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and the recent meetings of Iran, China, France, Germany, Russia, and the UK to resume their talks from the 2015 deal. JCPOA is an agreement on the Iranian nuclear deal. Israeli leaders have long threatened to use military action against Iran if diplomacy gets them out of significantly rolling back on nuclear advancements. Iran’s uranium enrichment activities have also escalated.
Israel is worried about Iran’s nuclear development because Iran supports Palestine, and with Iran’s nuclear development, there is a possibility that they can use the weapons against Israel. That is why Israel feels so strongly about intervening with military action if they don’t stop the nuclear developments. If they were to carry through with the agreement and lift sanctions, there could be a lot of conflict with a potential war between Iran and Israel. Conflict could either be because Iran uses weapons against Israel in support of Palestine or Israel intervenes with their nuclear plan. In addition, with Iran’s uranium enrichment activities to gain leverage in the region, we might see more conflict in the region due to power competition. It comes down to whether we trust them to deter nuclear capabilities or keep sanctions, and they might cause conflict with other countries in the region.
Sanctions are a method of the realist perspective as they use dominance to get a country to do what they might not want to do. Also, from the realist perspective, Iran’s nuclear developments cause a security dilemma because it threatens the security of other states, including Israel. Solving the security issues and ensuring international security is left to a few countries with power who can use dominance, such as imposing sanctions. Now that the countries who have the power of imposing the sanctions are considering lifting them on Iran with the agreement, it seems that international security will be threatened, especially from Israel’s viewpoint.
