The Nigerian government has finally moved in, filing an extradition request for Abba Kyari. This highly decorated officer was a part of the Nigerian police force. The United States wants him for connection in fraud and identity theft. The Officer was suspended initially after the FBI found evidence linking him to an online money laundering ring. Kyari faces three charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, identity theft, and money laundering. If found guilty he could face up to 20 years in jail. Kyari was also booked for connection and dealing with cocaine smuggling. He was caught by the NDLEA. Before Kyaris arrest he was known as a super cop making multiple high profile arrests, but was later found he was also sweeping under the rug extortion and killings.
My take on this article is that this is more proof to show that Africa as a whole is a shatterbelt. With senior officers finding a part of drug rings, money laundering, and identity theft it has brought another wave of mistrust to the region. With many failed states, it’s the greed of a few that is the downfall for many. This is why I think an outside global superpower is the only true force to contain and possibly tame that treacherous shatterbelt. Organizations like the African union have done little to no progress in its mission to unite africa. As the effects of colonialism leave its mark, corruption, government overthrows, and other issues have erupted. This is why I think countries like China and the US have the money and power to tame and breed that region into one that is stable and ready to be a part of the international system.
This topic relates to class with ideas of how the UN can help. The UN has many different subsidiaries that all serve different roles. With the major cultural division in Africa UNESCO is one sub-diary that could help unite africa. Their goal is to bring cultural peace and adopt international standards for education and freedom. These right now are not all equal in Africa. The UN also plays a role in upholding their goals which vary from no hunger. Infrastructure, and green energy efforts which are all severely needed in Africa.
