20 civilians at least were killed in Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in an attack in the northeastern region. Odette Zawadi, the leader of an activation group, stated the attack took place in Kikura. The attack took place with “wielding machetes and burning houses.” Local residents blame it on the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) armed group. “The attack comes months after DRC and Ugandan troops launched a joint operation against the ADF, which has killed thousands of civilians in the region since 2013.” The group has had numerous attacks beginning late in November where they continued to kill civilians and in December killed 16 people in Mangina.
A little bit of a background on the ADF is they originated in 1995 and was founded by Uganda. A couple years went by and they later moved towards the DRC where many in the group were seeking control of territory and resources east of the country. In 2019, despite the pledge allegiance to ISIS, otherwise known as ISIS, the UN researchers have not found any leaders or evidence of the ADF. Due to the uprising of attacks in the DRC, the Ugandan forces launched air and artillery raids since the beginning of the joint operation, pledging towards the communities to defeat the ADF. Even though the UN have not found evidence to ‘take action’ it is apparent the ADF is responsible for this. It is important for the DRC army to continue to take action from furthering an increase in attacks and fighting the ADF.
