A deadly blast killed 84 and injured a total of 210 in Kerman, targeting a memorial for General Qassem Soleimani, who also was killed by a U.S drone strike in 2020. This drone strike happened within a day of the drone bombing in Beirut, Lebanon. These drone strikes can probably be traced back to Israel and its promise to the world to hunt down terrorists and those apart or working with Hamas. The U.S. says that Israel didn’t have anything to do with this attack and says the U.S. was also not responsible. Instead, the U.S. says that Iran could be responsible for its attack because of its instability and inability to help its people.
This article is important because it creates even more instability in the Middle East that has already been apparent. It also shows Iran’s problems internally and externally with itself and its neighbors. Iran looks to blame Israel and the U.S. while seeking international support and empathy, while the U.S. is pushing the blame on Iran’s inability to control its people because of its authoritarian regime. If the U.S decides to leave the middle east I believe it will be the worst region in the world because of the different powers vying for land and people.
I think this connects to class because the events take place in a very strategic place in the world for the U.S. and Iran who looks to become a regional power. Iran knows that if it can get international backing, it could impose itself onto smaller countries within the region and gain even more influence. I also think the U.S. is attempting to push itself away from the region but is unable to because of Israel, Yemen, and now Iran’s aggressiveness. If the U.S. wants to become less involved in the middle east, it will have to make sure it leaves it in the hands of countries it can trust and those with power to keep peace within the region. That’s why I believe Israel and Saudi Arabia will be the future of the Middle East and their struggles with be created by of Iran which will seek to take advantage of the U.S disengagement in the Middle East.
