Saudi Arabia spearheads Arab scramble for alternative to Trump’s Gaza plan | Reuters
Saudi Arabia is pushing for urgent Arab efforts to build a plan for Gaza after multiple regional governments including Saudia Arabia were not pleased with U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed Gaza plan. Trump’s plan includes the relocation of Palestinians from Gaza to Egypt and Jordan, which some view as destabilizing. Since then, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, and the UAE have planned to meet in Riyadh to discuss a countering plan focusing on rebuilding and a two-state solution. Egypt created a proposal that would create a national Palestine committee, funding for reconstruction, and a buffer zone on the Egypt-Gaza border.
This article is significant as it displays the rising tension between Saudi Arabia and the US over the topic, as the US is making Saudia Arabia’s efforts of normalization with Israel more difficult. Getting U.S. support for a new plan could be crucial for its execution, so as these regional powers work to build a reconstruction plan, they must find a way to make it appealing to the US and find ways to win Trump over. However, I think the U.S. proposal may be part of an overarching plan by Trump – His announcing an extreme view and leaving it open for negotiation, hopefully ending with getting what Trump wanted originally.
I think that Arabian governments need to work closely to secure a plan that addresses all of their interests- like reconstruction, Palestinian governance, and regional stability- and find a way for it to appeal to the U.S. If the U.S. continues to disregard Arabian stability concerns, it could negatively affect our relationships with Arabian allies, so I think the U.S. should make efforts to balance our goals with their regional interests as well.
I can tie this to our class discussions of shatter belt regions, which the Middle East is a part of. The Israel-Palestinian conflict is a major event that is continuing this title, as it is a factor of regional instability, territorial and cultural issues, and other violence. One thing that could help this war and its instability is receiving external help from global actors like IGO, NGOs, or countries like the US.
