Israel’s ceasefires with Hezbollah and Hamas are both in doubt again

Israeli forces to remain in 5 Lebanon areas after withdrawal deadline | AP News

Israel has announced that they are keeping forces in five locations in Lebanon past the ceasefire date due to security concerns. Both Lebanon and Hezbollah are demanding a full withdrawal, however, there’s a fear of renewed conflict after an Israeli drone killed a senior Hamas figure in Sidon. In Gaza, the first phase including the return of hostages and Palestinian prisoners has continued, but the negotiations of the second phase have not been progressing. This phase is supposed to include the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. Israel has expressed support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s relocation plan of Palestinians from Gaza, and the transfer of control to the U.S., which has been rejected by Palestinians, Arab nations, and human rights groups.

This article is significant because it highlights the continued instability in region, and growing tensions between Israel, Hezbollah, and Hamas, as the ceasefire is again questioned. There are also geopolitical difficulties with the US and other Arab nations as Gaza peace plans are being introduced. The idea of war renewal can lead to prolonged conflicts and violence.

Israel should switch to diplomatic efforts to come to conflict solutions and commit to withdrawal agreements instead of furthering violence. The US could act as a mediator between Israel and its neighbors and continue to negotiate Gaza plans with Arab countries. Lebanon and Hezbollah shouldn’t be tempted with further military action but use diplomatic negotiations to end military escalation at the time of withdrawal. Hamas and Palestine should focus on the release of hostages and prisoners and get to the negotiations of the second phase of the ceasefire plan.

I can also connect this article to the continuation of a shatter belt region. The competing political and religious beliefs between Israel, the Hamas and Hezbollah Islamic groups, Palestinian nationalism, and more all fuel instability. The influence of global powers like the US, Iran, and Russia also adds to the instability of a shatter belt.
