In the article, “Big Success Story” it states that Sri Lanka is officially free of malaria. This sparked my attention because when I visited the country in 2011, I was told to “drench myself in bug spray”. Even when I went to bed, I had to put mosquito nets up and use citronella candles so I wouldn’t be bitten by the annoying bug. I was pleased to read that there have been actions taken by the government, like providing “indoor spraying, bed nets, rapid diagnostic kits and medicines that combined artemisinin, an effective treatment, with other drugs.” This has had a positive effect on the community, giving people peace of mind, as they go to sleep in treated rooms. The government has also issued free medical buses that provide free treatment to new migrants in the country. This is a huge step in keeping malaria out of the country because it gives people a way to be checked and treated without financial strain or the fear of deportation.  This will improve the tourism in Sri Lanka, helping the economy because more people will be likely to travel there because of the lower risk of disease. Sri Lanka is still recovering from the tsunami and war with the Tamil Tigers, so it is nice to see small victory that could potentially help the country as a whole.
