A new nationwide study shows that nearly two in every five women who commit suicide are Indian. This is extremely significant because it is unusual for a country with India’s geography and socio-economic indicators to have such high suicide rates. In fact, the new study suggests that the suicide rates of Indian women is three times higher than what would typically be predicted. The independent variable in this situation is clearly the patriarchal society under which India operates. One in every five Indian women are married before their fifteenth birthday, and nearly 62% of surveyed women say they believe it is justified for their husbands to beat them. Women are always treated as the property of a man, never knowing individuality in the same sense as in other cultures. This is obviously linked to the high number of suicides among the female Indian population.
