Pakistan’s Imran Khan pledges citizenship for 1.5m Afghan refugees

Imran Khan, prime minister of Pakistan, has pledged to grant citizenship to all Afghan refugees whose children have been raised and born in Pakistan. Refugees fleeing the soviet invasion in 1979 and those crossing over the border in order to escape violence and economic turmoil have caused Pakistan to have the largest refugee population in the world, 2.7 million according to the UN. About sixty percent of the Afghan refugee population was born in Pakistan, meaning that this new announcement will benefit over 1.5 million people, and allow families as a whole to stay in the country. Kahn hopes his pledge will undo decades of hostility towards Afghan refugees who have been blamed for producing or shielding terrorist and instead welcome them as citizens of Pakistan. The prime minister also promised Bengali refugees would receive the same treatment, including the Rohingya minority. Khan’s recent announcement proved that he plans to keep his promise of creating a new, progressive Pakistan despite the sources expressing scepticism on how it will be carried out.
