The United States continues its financial support of Bangladesh with an additional $202 million in order to help facilitate economic growth, development, and institution building, a US delegation in Dhaka reported on September 15th. The delegation, headed by the Secretary of the Treasury Department, is the first since the ousting of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina due to deadly protests in early August. The new Bangladesh Chief advisor, Muhammad Yunis, declared that the government would be appealing for $5 billion to help stabilize the economy after the Russia-Ukraine war drastically increased the cost of living. This latest financial aid is a continuation of nearly $1 billion pledged by the US to provide to Bangladesh between 2021 through 2026, $425 million has already been given. USAID declared the grant of $202 million a show of good governance, social, human, economic development and resilience between the two countries. The delegation also discussed economic issues and reforms, labor issues, investment, and the Rohingya crisis.
I think the allyship between Bangladesh and the United States will provide positive opportunities for both sides. Bangladesh receives financial assistance for rebuilding and development, and the US receives inexpensive factory labor. The commitment from Bangladesh to expand on institutional capacity and the dedication to human rights shows that this country is a good partner to the US. Bangladesh may also support Rohingyas in their search for sovereignty
Even though only one country is receiving something, both countries will benefit from this agreement. Bangladesh may provide more textile goods to the US, and in return, the US could possibly lower tariffs from imported Bangladeshi goods. In the long run, this will help the US by outsourcing cheap labor.
This will definitely improve diplomatic relations between the two countries, both will benefit from something the other can give them, whether its financial or trading. Bangladesh receiving funding from the US will also mean that MNCs from the US may start to expand into Bangladesh if they haven’t already.
