Here we are again, with India’s devastating pollution. There are women boxers training for a world championship in New Delhi, the capital of India, later this week. They are forced to wear masks and shirts over their nose and mouth, like the other 20 million people living in New Delhi, due to the unsafe breathing air. Parents from all over the world are worried about the boxers for health reasons, because as we know breathing the polluted air is extremely unhealthy, and can be even more devastating to a professional athlete. I think this is almost silly for India to go through with the world championship when the air is this unsafe. I understand that events like this take a lot of preparation and are costly, but I believe the health of the world’s people is more important, when they could move the championship to a place that has hosted it in the past.
Mothers in New Delhi worry for their children’s long term health. One mother explains that her son and daughter have developed asthma due to the smog, they have also been transferred to four different schools to allow them an indoor sportsplex. This mother feels she has deprived her children of the pleasure of going outside. She has been encouraged to move out of New Delhi, but for a woman running a business, and with her husband working at a law firm that can be a difficult decision and task. The article goes on to say that many of the 20 million people do not even know where their next meal will be from, therefore making it nearly impossible for those to escape the pollution. I believe that they need to put an end to this before people start dying, and I’m sure they have started trying, and it sounds like an ugly truth, but people won’t be able to survive the pollution much longer.
