Ghazni, a central Afghan city, has been one of the most heavily fought over areas in Afghanistan this year. Unfortunately, three US military service members were killed on Tuesday when an improvised explosive device detonated said the Nato-led Resolute Support mission in a statement. In addition, a US civilian contractor was also injured in the explosion and is currently receiving treatment. The city was overrun by a large Taliban force earlier this year but later driven out by Afghan and US forces after several days of fighting. The spokesman for the provincial governor claimed that an armed vehicle carrying roadside troops hit a large bomb on the side of the road in the Shabaaz area, right outside of the city. Hearing this makes many extremely upset because our own soldiers are dying for the evil that is happening in a whole different country. Not only have 11 American soldiers died this year in Afghanistan, but so have four Czech soldiers who were serving with Resolute Support. Their deaths were either in combat or in “insider attacks” by Afghan soldiers and police. Our soldiers would not be dying if we could focus on our nation’s own issues and concentrating on our conflicts here. This is an extremely difficult situation because our presence in Afghanistan helps counter terrorism but is at the expense of the American people and their families who have family members killed overseas. The US has been heavily involved in Afghanistan due to our 14,000 troops overseas fighting militant groups such as al-Qaida and Isis. However, I do think that since few countries are able to intervene, the powers that can should help defeat terrorist groups and prevent them from taking over. In addition to killing these militant groups, we are also stopping them from, spreading their beliefs and ideologies which is extremely important.
