Due to recent government intervention within the healthcare system of India, many more medical needs, specifically those of mothers and children, are being tended to. Maternal and child health are both very significant in India because of the extremely high and continually rising birth rate. This specific mission is called Mission Indradhanush and was developed by J.P Nadda working to immunize children under two as well as expecting mothers. Government and healthcare officials have been working from district to district aiding impoverished families that don’t normally receive medical attention. This program’s overall goal is to diminish diseases that are easily preventable once a vaccine has been given. According to The India Times, “…the government reached 32.8 million children and 8.4 million pregnant women over the last three years. (under the Mission Indradhanush)” Seeing such an improvement of the health from programs such as these has encouraged Prime Minister Rodi to increase the public spending by 1.35 % of its annual GDP. This means that 64,925,000,000 USD will soon be contributed to the health of India’s climbing population, particularly the lower classes. Modi sees the death of mothers, infants, and the declining health of India’s youth as a huge problem and hopes that this increase in budget will help the rest of the nation see that these childbirth and early deaths are serious problems that and are now being looked at as such. On an international level, the Indian government hopes that these actions they are taking will inspire other nations struggling with their citizens’ health to take action themselves.
