The situation in Afghanistan had blown out of control. The current government is unable to assist the people of Afghanistan and they have ISIS and Taliban running amok the countryside. Recently a bomb went off in a mosque in the capitol of the country, Kabul. Also, somewhat recently, a police checkpoint came under fire by armed gunmen, supposedly Taliban. Our actions there have not only destabilised the country, it has made it into a complete wreck. The government can barely protect themselves in the cities, and god knows what is happening in the countryside. I personally see some semblance to the Soviet backed government and how it fared against the Muhjahideen forces. Their control slowly slipped away as the backer withdrew their superior forces. Our being there has destabilised the area to a point where we may be doing more harm than good. Not only that if we were to stay there we would have to use more oppressive measures to kill off the insurgents. The reason why I bring up usage of oppressive measures is because I do not believe the Military is competent enough to use different tactics to defeat a irregular enemy. Their use of heavy handed tactics make the populace support and legitimize the insurgents. Resistance 101 for you, when you kill 10x more people than the insurgents you have made yourself the evil bad guy. The insurgents use this to their advantage, painting you as a evil despot who would murder millions, if given the chance. They use this to garner support, both material and popular support. Thereby the adage “For each one of us you kill ten more will replace him.” The situation is beyond repairing, we must learn from our mistakes for later excursions.
