Kyrgyzstan president Sadyr Japarov amends the constitution in a way that favors the power of the president while cutting parliamentary powers. After getting enough votes for his ideas to be legally binding, he cut the parliament’s seats by 25% and allowed the president to appoint judges and law enforcement officials by himself. Perhaps the most controversial article is article 70, “the power to initiate and veto laws and referendums”. While this power was initially given only to parliament, along with naming a prime minister, they now share these powers, which I feel is odd. Lastly, a Kurultai was established, which is basically a council of elites with representatives from every part of the country to act as a guide. With all of these I believe they are just giving the president more power. He was only able to get away with this because of his popularity, because the only reason he was able to run was his supporters protesting to get him out of jail, where his popularity soared through the roof and made his presidency popular. While some may think he is gaining too much power and will become a dictator, it looks like to me he just wants to stay in power long enough to restore the country to a former glory that past revolutions destroyed. While the EU does not support his ways he will probably change the country for the better.
