According to Taiwan Premier Su Tseng-Chu, it was an appropriate decision for Taiwan to shoot down a Chinese drone after multiple warnings. The drone flew over Taiwanese-controlled islands and traveled through the outskirts of the Kinmen islands and entered a restricted airspace where it was shot down and crashed into the sea. The drone was shot down for self-defense and was considered a threat to security. China´s foreign ministry then claimed that Taiwan was trying to escalate tension with China. This conflict is significant due to the long history between Taiwan and China, and they have had a tumultuous history and not known for getting along. Nearly 450 Chinese drones have flown into restricted air zones in the past year alone, but this was the first time Taiwan actually used force to deal with a foreign threat like this.

Tensions between Taiwan and China have already increased since US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan for a diplomatic meeting, which majorly upsetted China. In response to this, China has begun conducting live-fire drills around the sea of Taiwan. Taiwan actually used to be occupied by China in the 17th century by the Qing dynasty, but they gave the island to the Japanese empire after being defeated in the Sino Japanese war. China took the island again in 1945 when Japan was defeated in WWII. What led to the downfall was the civil war occuring in China between the nationalist government and newly formed Communist Party. The Communist Party took control of Bejing in 1949 and the nationalist government fled to Taiwan and took control of the island. China argues that Taiwan was originally part of China because it was initially a Chinese province, but Taiwan says they were never part of modern Chinese state that was formed under Mao Zedong in 1949. The main political party of Kuomintang (Taiwan) has been the main ruling body since. Only 17 countries recognize Taiwan as a country, and China places diplomatic pressure on other countries not to recognize Taiwan to this day.

Taiwan is defined as a Non-Recognized state, because although it has sovereignty over its own nation, it is still missing foreign recognition by a vast majority of countries. China still believes that Taiwan is part of China, but that is not what Taiwan believes. Because of this, it is unlikely that Taiwan will ever be recognized as a country. China has also passed Anti-Secession laws which discourages Taiwan from seeking independence and placing consequences if they attempt to do so. Strangely enough, Taiwanese citizens have access to their own passport but it does not grant them to enter UN buildings because they are not recognized by them. It is also difficult for Taiwan to become a recognized country because although the People´s Republic of China do not control them, they are speaking for them at the UN meetings. The clashing governments of the People´s Republic of China (China) and the Republic of China (Taiwan) has led to disputes of the legitimacy of governments and who is actually in charge of Taiwan, making it shifty for Taiwan to actually be represented in international affairs.
