The former leader of Pakistan, Imran Kahn, has evaded arrest yet again. Since a court order to arrest the former prime minister was issued roughly 2 weeks ago, Pakistani officials have been unable to fulfill it. Recent days have seen mass groups of Kahn supporters setting up barricades around his house, preventing local police from reaching him. Kahn has been charged with corruption, and since his ousting from Prime Minister last year, he has maintained his innocence and claimed the ousting was illegal. He maintains a large base of supporters, and is still relatively popular in Pakistan.
The police’s numerous failed attempts to arrest Imran Kahn show just how powerful and popular of a leader he still is in Pakistan, and is a sign of further turmoil should he actually be arrested. If Kahn were to be thrown in prison, we could see a situation similar to what occurred in Brazil just last year, when supporters of the former president, Jair Bolsonaro, stormed a number of key government buildings in protest of his election loss. Such an event could have massive ramifications no just within Pakistan, but throughout the region and the world. A destabilized Pakistan would likely lead to India taking advantage of the situation, making moves in areas like the Kashmir Region in an effort to grow their influence and limit that of Pakistan.
