India’s National Investment and Infrastructure Fund is partnering with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation to fund 49% of a 600 million sustainability project fund. This will be the NIIF’s first official bilateral fund since forming. The partnership, also known as the India-Japan Fund, was launched on Wednesday and has goals to promote renewable energy, reduce waste, and strengthen e-mobility. The India-Japan fund is predicted to help increase Japanese investments in India’s environmental preservation sector and marks a strong collaboration between Japan and India which will help their economies prosper and allow both countries to have a lesser joint impact on the environment.
The India-Japan Fund is important because not only is it a huge step for the NIIF but it signifies the strengthening of the partnership between Japan and India which will be mutually beneficial for them both. India and Japan have been working together ever since 1958 when Japan loaned India money in response to India providing iron ore to Japan after World War II. They both started the fund because of their good-standing relationship and shared interests in environmental preservation. I think a fund this large will have significant effects on their relationship and will make it much easier for Japan and India to make other deals in the future because of the avenue the fund has created. Climate change is a detrimental issue so it’s important that countries as large as India and Japan are coming forward and putting plans in place as well as finances to carry out those plans to reduce emissions. The fund may motivate other countries to contribute to reducing emissions and expanding their economies to renewable energy and other environmental preservation methods. To have a significant change in the world and permanently reduce emissions will take time but the India-Japan fund will hopefully be the forerunner for other countries to start prioritizing environmental issues.
The India-Japan Fund connects to class by highlighting the importance of the international political economy sector of international relations and how India and Japan have a mutually beneficial relationship with each other through having interlinked trade and influencing each other’s economies. The fund also brings up a common theme within economies of how two countries may not get along but if their economies are linked then they may still have good relations, an example of this being the United States and China who significantly rely on each other for trade. While India and Japan have more than just economic connections, it is the economic sector of their relationship that has proven to be the strongest. The fund also shows how critical junctures can influence international relations, specifically the start of the critical juncture after World War II that began India and Japan’s relations with each other.
