Summary – Pakistan recently asked all undocumented refugees to leave their country, including about 1.7 million Afghans, and that is not going over well in the Taliban ruled Afghanistan. The Taliban has issued a stern warning that Pakistan should not be cruel to Afghans as they are asked to leave, they are not to seize personal property and assets. The Taliban’s acting deputy defence minister, Mohammed Yaqoob Mujahid, claims that Pakistan’s anti-migrant policy is severely damaging the relationship between Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Taliban also called out to the UN to get them to intervene in the ongoing migrant crisis, trying to get them to enforce a safe return of refugees. Nearly a quarter million Afghans have fled Pakistan to avoid imprisonment after Pakistani threats. Pakistan has issued this because an offshoot of the Taliban is attacking Pakistani security forces in Pakistan.

Analysis – The Taliban has a history of violence and this is something that is not sitting well with them. I would be less than surprised if this altercation escalates and shots are fired between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Kicking out such a large number of immigrants is not easy because they have to find a place to go, and in this case many of the Afghans in Pakistan fled from the Taliban-ruled Afghanistan, so they have no place to go. While it’s understandable for the Afghan leaders to be concerned about their people’s safety, it’s a bit confusing that they are willing to give threats to Pakistan over people that fled their country. The most concerning thing about this conflict to me is that both sides are making threats. The Taliban did not say what they would do, but they warned against the mistreatment of their people, while Pakistan is threatening to imprison those who stay in their country undocumented.

Connection to class – This relates to the liberal idea of the waning of war. In past time with a conflict such as this we may have seen a lot less diplomacy and the Taliban instantly resulting to violence. Instead they gave Pakistan a chance and said if you are cruel to our people there will be consequences, rather than just attacking Pakistan and trying to force them into not kicking out all of their refugees. Serious conflicts do not result in war nearly as often anymore and this is another example of the in current times.
