For context BRICS represents the partnership of Brasil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Last year Pakistan formally requested to join this financial partnership. Pakistan’s request to join BRICS may be accepted soon as Russia has announced its backing to allow Pakistan to join BRICS. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk pledged backing on Pakistan’s bid to enter BRICS. This may come in conflict with India’s participation as the Pakistani and Indian conflict has been bloody in the past.

This comes as an interesting play from Russia who is desperately attempting to find allies thus backing Pakistan’s bid will strengthen Russia’s connections to Central Asian and the Middle East. In a statement Wednesday the Pakistani Foreign Minister stated that Moscow had desires to intensify bilateral, political, economic, and defensive dialogues. This announcement comes right before the 2024 BRICS summit in October. Furthermore the Russian Prime MInister will be in the Pakistani capital next month to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. The SCO was established to counterweight against western powers in 2001.

The partnership and consolidation of alliances in the East could lead some in the West to worry. Though it is unclear what the political interests of India is in this situation. India is currently strengthening ties to America while still being included in Brics to counter Western dominance. Pakistan also stands in a major border and ethnic disputes with India. Russian Ministers were also concerned about reaching a consensus within BRICS due to the large global diversity of the members in this IGO. Russian trade relations to neutral countries are a pivotal part of its war effort in Ukraine. So securing trading agreements in these neutral areas of the world will be vital to their success.

This connects to class as BRICS is and IGO that demonstrates the ability of governments to create economic groups and partnerships that they all can benefit from. The BRICS organization has given large benefits to the countries included and has been a unit that stands starkly against Western expansionism.
