On October 1, 2024, Iran acted on their threats of a missile strike on Israel. This missile strike was in retaliation to Israel’s bombing on Iran’s ally Hezbollah in Lebanon. Israel had previously blown up pagers and then bombed the leaders of Hezbollah. It was said that there were only a few injuries caused in Israel thanks to almost all the missiles being intercepted. This is a continued escalation between Iran and Israel after a Hamas leader was killed while visiting Iran. Israel has now promised that Iran “made a big mistake tonight and it will pay for it” on Tuesday. Iran backs both Hezbollah and Hamas, well known enemies and terrorist groups against Israel. Israel is viewing Iran as their biggest “foe” and accusing them of having nuclear weapons, which Iran is currently denying, but outside sources don’t know for sure.
I think this is an incredibly important event in this war because as the anniversary of the beginning of the war gets closer, the war is growing and getting worse instead of resolving. I think that this will lead Iran into playing an even larger role in the war including getting more personally involved along with backing Hamas and Hezbollah more heavily. I think this event happened because Iran wanted to very publicly display who they are aligned with and who their enemy is. Instead of only backing organizations financially, they are now using their own force. I also think they did it to show their people they are willing to protect them and go to war for their safety. Hezbollah being a strong ally of Iran, Iranian people could feel endangered from Israel as well.
I think Iran will respond by becoming close with the replacements of Hezbollah’s leaders, continually backing Hamas and preparing more missiles to threaten and launch into Israel. I think Israel will respond with their own attacks on Iran along with continued attacks on what is left of Hezbollah. I think Israel will want to do the same for their people in protecting them and continuing in this war for their safety. This event directly connects to class because we are talking about multi-causation and this specific event along with this whole war has many underlying causes including religious, territorial and ethnic. That’s why this has been such an awful war where solutions are very hard to come by.
