On February 13, 2025, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and United States President Donald Trump attended a press conference in the East Room of the White House. The meeting underscored a growing India-US alliance, built on shared economic, security, and strategic interests.
President Donald Trump and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi shake hands during a news conference in the East Room of the White House, Thursday, February 13, 2025, in Washington. Trump and Modi discussed the Indian tariffs and how they can expect reciprocal tariffs from the United States. Modi emphasized India’s goal of doubling trade with the US to $500 billion by 2030. The discussion also highlighted the potential for significant development in India’s defense sector, with talk of India acquiring advanced fighter jets from the US.
Modi admired President Trump’s efforts to improve American manufacturing and job creation. Giving an approving nod to Trump’s long-time campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again,” has taken their twist on it, “MIGA” or “Make India Great Again.” Through this reference, Modi not only praised Trump’s leadership but also emphasized the growing India-US partnership.
This shows growing interest in trading between the two countries. India is expressing their national interest by expanding their influence, starting by beginning to mend relations between themselves and the United States. Their “grand strategy” of containing Chinese influence is now beginning to take shape as they begin to partner with another anti-China nation. The increasing levels of Chinese military presence in the Indian Ocean is the driving factor for India’s desire to modernize its military, particularly its naval capabilities. Modi even expressed optimism about the potential for expanded economic collaboration, especially in trade, technology, and energy sectors, which would contribute to both countries’ aspirations of becoming stronger global players.
President Trump and Modi’s successful conference is likely to lead to an end to Indian-American tariffs, which would create economic prosperity in either country. While it is uncertain what actions either country is going to take, I believe it is likely, due to the US and India’s national interests, that the tariffs are going to be dropped and America will seek to implement American influence in India and the Indochina region.
As mentioned earlier this is an example of India beginning to up into motion its grand strategy as a rising global power. Their attempt to halt China’s progress into the Indian Ocean is going to be facilitated by having America as one of their better relationships. India will have the capability to increase their military power and help drive the Chinese out of their coming sphere of influence.
