Bharti Airtel, India’s second largest telecom provider, has just announced signing a deal with Elon Musk’s Starlink. Airtel is looking to use the US’s advanced satellite internet services in India however, the Indian government must grant Starlink permission to operate first. “At least 40% of India’s more than 1.4 billion people still don’t have access to the internet and cheap satellite broadband is needed to bridge this gap”, Associated Press. Musk has been pushing for Starlink to reach populous markets in the world but entry into Indian markets has been difficult. This is due to security concerns and resistance from other major Indian telecom providers. Starlink operates at least 6,900 active satellites that orbit Earth that minimize delays even in areas where the internet was not previously available. If the deal is approved, India could provide affordable satellite internet to areas with limited access all over the country.

This article is important because it highlights India’s internet accessibility challenges and the potential impact Starlink could have for internet access nationwide. Better access to the internet in India could enhance education, healthcare and economic opportunities for those who have not been able to access the internet in the past. India could connect to more global markets and open more job offerings in fields with technology and telecommunications. The entry of Starlinks in India could create more competition in Telecom markets, creating better prices and/or services for customers. If Starlink is able to succeed in India, it could pave the way for other populous countries that have limited satellite internet technology to invest in Starlink. Starlink will likely continue to push for approval from the Indian government so it can begin operations and expand its global connectivity. The Indian government might weigh the economic benefits of expanding internet access throughout the country and also consider the outcomes of creating more competition in telecommunications.

When connecting this article to class, I think this article emphasizes globalization. The partnership between Bharti Airtel and Starlink emphasizes the importance of global connectivity when expanding satellite capabilities across borders. Telecommunications is a key area of globalized trade in this article and international markets are able to reach local needs in different countries.
