Eight people were arrested in Iran for being suspected of attempting to send sensitive information to Israeli intelligence agency Mossad. During the country’s 12-day war with Israel and the United States, they allegedly tried to transmit the coordinates of sensitive sites and details about senior military figures. They were arrested before being able to carry out their plans and in addition to the people, materials available for making bombs, explosives, and traps had also been seized.
Some human rights groups believe the Iranian government uses espionage charges and executions as a form of political repression. Recently, Iran had executed at least eight people for passing information to Israel and citizens were told to report any individuals they thought were acting suspiciously during the war. The war also led to an increase in deportation of Afghan migrants in Iran after local authorities accused them of spying for Israel.
With the growing repression of the country, this could lead to citizens rebelling. With the fear of being arrested or executed for just the suspicion of trading information with Israel or America, Iranian citizens will start to feel oppressed.
I believe citizens would benefit from fighting for their rights. While I understand that war means some rights will be sacrificed in ways, however, I believe the Iranian government should go through different ways of making sure citizens aren’t trading information. They should start investigations as opposed to arrest or execution immediately.
This relates to the idea of sovereignty because it shows how Iran is using its power. With Iran jumping to arrest suspects, it shows how much sovereignty the government has and how much control it has over the country. This also relates to the theme of peace and conflict because not only does it relate to the war between Iran, US and Israel, but it also relates to growing conflict within Iran.
