South Asia’s Geopolitics Is Becoming More Complex, Less Stable

In South and Central Asia, countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India are facing difficulty in balancing civilian governance and military influence in government. In the countries listed, where the military holds or re-enters significant power, civilian institutions weaken, democracy stalls, and accountability suffers. For example, analysts argue that in Pakistan the armed forces maintain bad influence over foreign policy, domestic security and even the economy, undermining the rule of the civilian government. In contrast, where civilian institutions are stronger and the military’s role is clearly defined and limited, political systems tend to have higher transparency and better governance that leads to greater economic output. This dynamic matters because when militaries dominate politics it often leads to slower reforms, less investment in human capital, and fewer opportunities for citizens to participate meaningfully in their government. Some examples of this are seen in Pakistan, where military dominance has interfered with their government and its officials, as seen in the forced removal of Prime Minister Imran Khan in 2022 after he clashed with the military’s beliefs in policy control. Along with this elections that are held are under scrutiny in countries such as Bangladesh, where their 2018 and 2024 elections were suspected of being rigged. Another example includes Myanmar and how their country has fallen to military rule after the 2021 coup, causing GDP to fake and slow regional trade. When militaries dominate politics, it creates instability, censorship, and weaker economies, making the entire region riskier for global trade and business development. This affects ordinary people because these countries play a key role in international markets where many companies emerge from. Further, instability means fewer job opportunities and disrupted supply chains. Things that impact careers, education, and how quickly services reach consumers across the world. Overall, highlighting the impact of how countries are run, with the everyday lives of others.
