A Japanese court has sentenced Tetsuya Yamagami to life in prison for killing former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in July 2022. Yamagami admitted that he shot Abe during a campaign speech in Nara, using a homemade gun. The trial has been closely watched in Japan and around the world because the assassination shocked a country where gun violence is very rare.

Yamagami told police and the court that his actions were motivated by anger and the Unification Church, a controversial religious organization. He blamed the church for causing his family financial problems through donations, mainly targeting his mother. He believed that Abe has close ties to the church and believed that killing him would bring light to such.

The trial revealed that the assassination lead to debates in Japan over the relationships between politicans and powerful religious groups. Investigations found that many members of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) had connections with the Unification Church.

This killing revealed hidden political ties to non state actors and showed how domestic event can affect a country’s global image and diplomatic standings.
