Mojtaba Khamenei has been appointed as Iran’s new supreme leader following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, who was killed in recent U.S.–Israeli strikes. The decision was announced by the Assembly of Experts, the group responsible for choosing Iran’s top authority. At 56, Mojtaba became the third supreme leader since the founding of the Islamic Republic after the Iranian Revolution.
Mojtaba Khamenei is widely seen as a hard-line political and religious figure with strong connections to the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Despite this influence, some critics note he lacks the religious credentials traditionally expected for the role. His selection has also drawn international attention and criticism. Donald Trump previously called the potential appointment “unacceptable,” while Israeli officials warned they may target whoever becomes Iran’s new supreme leader.
The appointment comes during intense regional conflict following the strikes that killed the elder Khamenei and several family members. Analysts say the swift selection aims to demonstrate that Iran’s leadership structure remains stable and capable of maintaining control despite external pressure and internal uncertainty.
I think that this new supreme leader will only worsen Iran and the US’s relations, because when the US and Israel removed the previous supreme leaderAli Khamanei. The US wanted the new and replacement supreme leader to more closely align with a democratic values and be willing to work with the US and other western allies. However, mojtaba khamenei doesnt differfer from his father ideals and beliefs so his is not in the US interest. This I think will make the Iran and US war worse and last for longer.
The US does not view the new supreme leader well because he does not coincide with their goals and hopes for the “new supreme leader” as Mojtadba is going to continue to implement and follow his fathers government precedent. The United States sees Mojtaba as “unacceptable”. This I believe will cause the US and Israel to continue strikes on Iran. Iran had to elect a new supreme leader to assert dominance towards the United States and maintain structure in Iran.
This war and conflict with the US and Israel and Iran is connected to issues of global security and safety. It also is an issue of the US violating Iran sovereignty and undermining Iran’s government. The US is looking to bring peace and possible democratic transition within the Iranian government, but violated their sovereignty, an international law, while trying to attain it.
