Analysis on As Hong Kong tightens screws on rebellion, democracy moves further out of reach

China is and has been communist for a very long time. A lot of people just go along with the one country, two systems policy, but other people do not like it. Hong Kong has a movement called the umbrella movement. This is where many people who are pro democracy gather together with yellow umbrellas and protest in the streets. They block off streets and get in the way of store openings and protest communism and preach democracy.

A man named Benny Tai has led this movement despite his risk for time in jail. He is a Hong Kong UNiversity professor and leads this movement every year. Hong Kong government is trying to pass an anti-sedition act; anti-sedition means that people would not be allowed to talk against their government and it would be illegal. In China and Hong Kong it is communist, but the yellow umbrella protesters are pro democracy. If the anti-sedition act is passed they will no longer be able to protest and march.

I think that these countries can have a communist government but I think that people who disagree should be able to express their opinion. China has a very restricted press and there are many laws that prohibit citizens rights to speech. If this anti-sedition act gets passed they will have even less freedom. It is scary to think about not being able to express my opinion because i live in America and I am used to being able to say almost anything I want. I think all countries should be like this because it creates more diversity and openness.

The people of the Umbrella Movement are trying to send the message of peace, love, equality, and rights. I think many countries with dictatorship or communist governments look up to the United States and other free European countries and they are in awe of their rights and freedom. I think it is good the Umbrella Movement keeps trying despite the risks because it is what they strongly believe in.
