When Sri Lanka had an economic crisis in 2022, India had helped out by giving credit lines throughout 2022, that helped with fuel imports and other assistance. The economic crisis happened because of a small amount of federal exchange reserves. Recently, the new President of Sri Lanka had been working to get a $2.9 billion loan from the IMF (International Monetary Fund), and working with China, Japan and India to get more financial assistance. The President says he is hopeful about getting the loan. This $2.9 billion loan will be spread out over 4 years, and had been working with the IMF since April of last year. The President said that India and Sri Lanka had talks on debt restructuring, and will start negotiations with China soon. Sri Lanka is not looking for a bailout with China, but only an extension for loan repayment spread out over 20 years. The President has also expressed interest in selling state-owned enterprises, along with preparing to privatise Sri Lanka Telecom, and Sri Lanka Airlines. The President has also raised taxes in response to the economic collapse, and expresses understanding of the hardship it’ll put on his people.
I don’t really have an opinion on this, Sri Lanka’s trying to recover from an economic collapse. I think the actions it’s taking are, in terms of economic collapse, relatively reasonable. I don’t know a lot of details, or the full timeline of this issue, so I can’t say whether or not he’s making the right decisions. The loan seems like a big deal, but I also don’t know Sri Lanka’s wealth or ability to repay. All things considered, the new president seems to be managing things well.
This article is related to class because it’s in my assigned part of the world, and because this is an international issue. And an interesting one.
