India has skipped out on voting for a UN General Assembly (UNGA) resolution. This resolution had called for Israel to end its participation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory within 12 months. Even though India had abstained from voting on the matter, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution. They had 124 Nations votes in favor, 14 against, and 43 abstained, such as India. Some of the other countries that had abstained were Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, Nepal, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom. Israel and the US were among the nations who voted against the resolution.

The resolution that India had abstained from and that the United Nations General Assembly had presented would affect the region by removing Israel’s presence in Palestinian Territory. My take on India’s absence in the vote is that they actually should have voted in favor of it, and as we can see, 124 Nations also agreed that they should adopt it. This is because Israel’s active presence in an Occupied Palestinian Territory is in violation of international law and negatively impacts regional peace. The Palestinian-resolution also helps state that breaches made by Israel “seriously threaten regional and international peace and security.”

Some ways in which India could respond to the event is by instead of abstaining from the vote, India could have voted in favor of the resolution in order to have helped promote regional peace in the country. One way that Palestine could respond to the event is by continuing to have commitment towards non-violence and to continue to gain the votes of more and more nations. One way that Israel could respond to the event is by ending their presence in areas that are designated as Occupied Palestinian Territories.

The organization that called for the end of the Israeli occupation is known as the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The United Nations General Assembly is a part of The United Nations (UN), which is known as an Intergovernmental Organization, or IGO. The reason India was able to make a decision on whether or not they wanted to support the Palestinian-resolution was because the UNGA is a forum for all 193 UN member states. This allows for a global representation of opinions and positions on international issues.
