Iran has rejected direct negotiations with the US in response to Trump’s letter

The Iranian president stated on March 30th that the Islamic Republic rejected direct negotiations with the U.S. over its rapidly advancing nuclear program. The response opened the possibility of indirectly negotiating with the U.S., but there has been no progress and a lack of trust with the U.S. after Trump’s first term and his unilateral withdrawal from the Tehran Nuclear Deal with world powers in 2018. Other aspects that contribute to this lack in cooperation are the U.S. conduction of intense airstrikes targeting the IRanian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, causing an ever increased risk of military action targeting Iran’s nuclear program.

While Iran didn’t have exactly warm relations with the Biden administration, the Trump administration has in the past wronged the Iranians, creating a precedent that the administration is unreliable, and in fear of another deal falling through, the Iranian continue to be unbudgendly ununcomperable. This article is now outdated, and peace talk plans are set for this weekend in Oman, hoping to come to an amicable decision and agreement on the topic of the Iran nuclear program. This update is expected, as in the current political atmosphere, politics and political agreements are often showboating for the purpose of bringing the other country to the table. The rejection from Iran serves as a scare tactic to get the U.S. to the table, while the U.S. continues threats of military action to bring Iran to the table as well.

This talk and thus rejection of negotiation is also the rejection of a treaty. A Treaty is a principle of International relations that once treaties are signed and ratified must be observed. This is like an International law in which two or more states agree to follow or conduct the state in a certain way that is aligned for the benefit of each state. It will be interesting to see whether the Trump and Iran peace talks are productive and end in a treaty of some sort that provides security satisfaction for both. My personal guess on what will occur from the peace talks is possible increased volatility or taking away sanctions in order to get to this deal. The issue is that the U.S. can’t guarantee that other states will take in part of the lessing or getting rid of sanctions, thus making the potential impact lessen, and the deal not working in the favor of Iran.
