Iranian officials have stated that they would be open to nuclear talks with any country, especially mentioning the United States. However, this deal includes that the other stakeholder in talks with Iran must guarantee that there will be no attacks on their nuclear development bases in comparison to the Israeli-US attacks.
In my opinion, I think this sounds like a way to make Iran look like the good guys who are just trying to live while America’s being the big global bully that’s pushing everyone around. This is probably a good move in the Iranian strategy because it seems that the only way to destroy America’s legitimacy as the top of the world is to turn them from the “hero” into the “villain.” With America being the villain it will cause a domino effect that will cause other allies to be less likely to side with America.
In my opinion, I think that the United States should maybe comply with this potential deal from the Iranian government for two reasons. One, is that the US wants some sort of control over Iran’s future nuclear program because of that fear of nuclear attacks so this deal would get the US what they want while also not creating a national threat of war. The second reason is that, with Iran in kahoots with the UN again, they can resume the monitoring of their nuclear progress as they were before the attacks and the bonds split. This would add another layer of protection to the United States nuclear threat.
Topics discussed in class that relate to this because Iran is using a different reverse method which is also referred to as soft disempowerment. Making America look bad and Iran looking good has a linear effect where if America looking bad goes up, then Iran looking good will also go up. Iran is already in hot water with a lot of neighboring states so using real soft power would cost too many resources for it to be worth it.
