Summary: In South Africa, violence erupted amidst protests against undocumented migrants. Due to ongoing conflict occurring in the DRC, many people (tens of thousands) have fled to seek refuge in safer countries, such as South Africa. The result of this heavy migration to South Africa includes job competition, draining public resources, and a rise in crime. This specific protest took place in Durban, which has become a hub for migration. It was reported that during this protest, five Congolese nationals were hurt. The anti-illegal migrant group armed themselves with sticks and attacked people from the encampment. Police responded by using stun grenades which further injured civilians due to the chaos of the event. The wave of groups supporting anti-illegal migration has spread in South Africa, triggering a deadline set by these groups for September 30th, 2026. This deadline demands undocumented migrants to leave the country. Thus far, over 200,000 migrants have fled to other countries or have gone back to their country of origin. The exact death toll is unconfirmed, but South African police say that at least four migrants have been killed.
Class Connection: The Scramble for Africa, which took place between 1880 and 1914, has severely impacted Africa and, for decades, has been a major cause of conflict. The Scramble left tribes of people who did not get along forced into a country together. The result of this has been ongoing deadly wars which have destabilized most African countries. South Africa, specifically, had to deal with British imperialism, and their independent nations (ex: Zulu) were conquered. South Africa has now become a multinational state where many different cultural, ethnic, and linguistic groups reside such as: Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho, Tswana, and Afrikaners. This diversity has not been peaceful, and many conflicts over land, power, and resources have taken place. As a result of this mixture of groups within one sovereign state, South Africa perfectly represents a multi-nation state.
Analysis: This event is not surprising, and if anything, very predictable. In almost every country where large masses of migration takes place, specifically illegal migration, protests and complaints against this migration happen as a result. I think the deadline is a sign of more violence to come. I also think you could easily apply this situation to other countries. South Africa is not the only country taking in many refugees; Colombia, Germany, and Turkey are currently taking in the most refugees. Out of these countries, both Germany and Turkey are seeing strong public resentment and political backlash towards their governments for allowing this migration. Due to these countries also seeing a rise in conflict between migrants and citizens, I think it’s not a stretch to say this will continue to happen within many other countries that deal with an influx of refugees. Whenever a large, harmful political/natural event happens in a country, thousands of people have to flee to seek safety in neighboring countries. An event that happened recently that has resulted in people fleeing was the military escalation in Yemen. Many Yemeni civilians have already fled their country, and I can imagine many more will. I think the situation that’s happening within South Africa will be repeated wherever these Yemeni civilians end up settling.
