Ousmane Sonko Senegal opposition chief is set to report to court over possible rape allegations brought against him. He has agreed to go to court as Senegals parliament voted last week to strip Sonko of his legal immunity. By stripping his legal immunity ist allows police to investigate the case. Controversy started when Sonko went to a salon last month and an employee of the salon filed rape charges against him. Sonko who is the leader of the Pastef party has denied the charges. He thinks the current President, Macky Sall, has created these charges to remove him from the 2024 elections. Sonko told reporters he would obey the summons but will put up a strong fight in court. The rape allegations come as uncertainty because President Sall will seek a third term and generally Presidents in the French colony are limited to two consecutive terms. Other presidents in West Africa have used constitutional changes to win third terms.

These allegations brought to Sonko is just the beginning to a hopeful change in the country. It will change how government officials are allowed to do things others in the country can’t. If Sonko’s charges are proven guilty then there will begin new laws that will strip legal immunity from officials. This article is important because it will determine whether or not Okono will be able to run in the 2024 election where he was a fierce competitor against Macky Sall in the 2019 election. If Sall were to win again it would affect the region because typically presidents only serve 2 terms.

From a realist perspective this allegation can be seen as selfish by current President Sall to try and eliminate Sonko from the race. If his allegations are true, this will be a turning point in the country as it will change how government officials can do things differently then normal citizens without any punishments. Within the upcoming months we should start to see how this trial goes.
