The Biden administration has approved a $1 billion arms sale to Nigeria. These arms will be used against criminal gangs and extremists to the north of Nigeria. These arms include 24 Bell AH-1Z viper helicopters, which come with night vision, targeting systems, engines, and arms to go along with these attack helicopters. The United States has pledged support to Nigeria and anybody else fighting terrorism, as well as insurgents to the north of the nation. The Biden administration has also said that the sale will “better equip Nigeria to protect shared security objectives and promote regional stability. This sale comes after the Biden administration has significantly cut funding in lack of support of Ukraine in it’s war against Russia.

I don’t understand why Biden is giving away so many weapons and feels the need to get involved with every war he can. First it was Ukraine, then Israel, and now we’re funding Nigeria. While the United States has always supported somebody and has had a foot in the door in nearly every war that goes on in the world but we’ve never spent this much money and resources in a 4 year span, especially on several different wars in several different regions, i feel that we need to be weary of spreading ourselves too thin, making too many enemies, and spending money that we don’t have. With our national debt already above 20 trillion we need to stop spending and expanding our budget.

In class we talk about proxy wars, when one country uses another to fight their wars, for example, the United States using and funding Ukraine to fight Russia after Russia provoked Ukraine. Proxy wars are a favorite of the United States and it seems that we have been doing it more often than we usually would under the Biden administration. I’m interested to see the changes that would be made in the future after the 2024 election, assuming that Biden doesn’t win. Will we continue our support of foreign countries like Nigeria in their combat against terrorism? Or will we pull out and start focusing on ourselves?
