Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud accused Ethiopia of trying to take over part of Somalia’s territory by signing a port deal with Somaliland, a region that claims to be independent. Speaking at the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Mohamud criticized the agreement, which lets Ethiopia use a naval base in Somaliland’s Berbera port for 50 years. Somalia considers Somaliland part of its own territory, so it sees this deal as a threat to its sovereignty. Mohamud suggested that Somalia might go to war to stop the deal, but Ethiopia’s leader, Abiy Ahmed, said he had no intention of starting a conflict.

The deal between Ethiopia and Somaliland over a 50-year lease for a naval base at the Berbera port has led to a major conflict with Somalia. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud accused Ethiopia of trying to annex Somali territory through this agreement. Speaking at the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Mohamud stated that Somalia strongly opposes this deal because it views Somaliland as part of its own territory. This deal, which allows Ethiopia to use Somaliland’s port for both military and commercial purposes, is seen as a direct challenge to Somalia’s sovereignty. Mohamud’s claim that Ethiopia’s military personnel are already in Somaliland adds to the tension. Although Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has denied any intentions to start a war, Mohamud suggested that Somalia might be willing to go to war to prevent the deal from happening. This dispute could worsen the fragile security situation in the Horn of Africa, making it crucial for both sides to find a peaceful solution.

The dispute between Somalia and Ethiopia over a port deal with Somaliland shows how international relations can become complicated. Ethiopia signed a 50-year lease to use a naval base at the port of Berbera in Somaliland, but Somalia sees this as a threat to its sovereignty because it considers Somaliland part of its own territory. This kind of disagreement can lead to diplomatic problems and even conflict if not handled carefully. It’s a reminder that respecting borders and understanding the politics of different regions is important in international relations. This situation also shows how sensitive issues like statehood and sovereignty can affect regional stability.
