Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his first visit to Ethiopia on December 17, 2025, addressing parliamentarians in Addis Ababa and advocating for renewed strategic bilateral ties. He highlighted a shared Global South vision emphasizing fair development, accessible technology, and respected sovereignty, declaring, “We will walk together as equals, build together as partners, and succeed together as friends.”
Modi and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed signed MOUs on UN peacekeeper training, education, and establishing a data center at Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They also pledged cooperation on managing Ethiopia’s international debt under the G20 Common Framework and combating terrorism.
Modi received Ethiopia’s highest civilian honor, the “Great Honor Nishan Ethiopia,” as the first foreign head of state to do so. The visit underscores Ethiopia’s post-civil war recovery, shifting alliances amid strained U.S. relations, and its recent BRICS membership, with India set to host the next summit.
This event shows cooperation between the two countries which is important for the future of both countries. They discuss exciting projects and this event is a perfect example of international relations and how recognizing collective interest can benefit both countries.
Both India and Ethiopia can use the outcome of their meeting to protect the future of their states. They can move forward with hopes of a strong alliance and if they continue with this, both countries can succeed while keeping their national interest and security in mind.
This event is an example of liberal theory, and how it applies to international relations and how countries interact. Both countries have taken a liberal approach to their alliance and it puts both countries’ best interests in mind because they are taking an issue they both struggle with and coming up with a collective solution.
