Analysis: ‘I’m not Father Christmas’, Macron tells restive French Guiana

Many of the people of French Guiana feel like they are being overlooked by France and need their support. The previous French president Francois Hollande promised over a billion euros in the economy and agreed to invest another 2.1 billion overtime but has not followed through. Despite having one of the best GDP’s in South American due to their construction of the European Space Agency’s rocket launching site, they are currently having many issues with unemployment, illegal immigration, crime, and poor infrastructure. When the new French president Emmanuel Macron arrived there last week he was confronted by many protesters supporting more employment and security. He responded to their protests by saying “I am not Santa Claus because the Guianese are not children, I am here with ambition for French Guiana but I did not come to make promises, that time is over.” Emmanuel Agreed to put the promised 1 billion Euros in the Economy but stated that he would give no more or no less. I think this is a difficult situation because 2.1 billion Euros is a lot of money to invest in French Guiana but they will continue their protesting towards the French government until they get the money the previous president promised. I think that the president should go through with the previous presidents promise and give them the extra money because it will help them grow and increase their Economy which will ultimately wind up helping France. It will also stop the protests.
