Mexico posted record homicide records at the end of 2017, with more than 27,000 murders that year. Recently, the United States has issued a travel warning against five Mexican states, advising tourists against visiting those areas. One of the largest factors of the rise in homicides are Mexican drug cartels. The United States essentially labeled these areas of Mexico as ‘wartorn’ or as safe as a country such as Afghanistan. It will be interesting to see how this plays out; with this issue, Mexico should see a significant drop in tourism, and perhaps relations between our two countries will deteriorate slightly. It’s kind of insulting to be a country labeled as war torn.
