Analysis: Rift in US-Mexican relations

Mexico has long been an ally with the US. In recent years however, the relationship between the two countries has degraded dramatically. This is cause for concern. One of the reasons the US has been so powerful is that both its Northern and Southern neighbors have been cooperative. I’m not saying we have lived in complete harmony, but when compared to many neighboring countries, the US and Mexico have been relatively good to each other.

In the era of the Trump administration, meetings between the US and Mexican president have been cancelled multiple times. A heated phone called between the two was documented that further hurt relations.

Trade between the US and Mexico is important. Prices for certain goods would sky rocket if Mexico decides to tax American companies operating within their borders. Whether the US wants to admit it or not, we rely on Mexico. Trying to block ourselves off from our neighbor to the south would hurt both countries.

Maybe the Trump administration is finally starting to understand this. They have exempt Mexico from the new steel and aluminum tariffs. Hopefully this allows for a thawing in relations.

I personally hope we dedicate just as much time as we do with the French or British to Mexico. Having a secure border helps a country, especially a country wanting to operate globally, greatly. Before the US government can start influencing others around the world, they have to have the area around them in order. Canada is already well off. Relations with Mexico is the last thing to fix.
