Brazil’s ex-president and leader of the steelworker’s union, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has turned himself into the federal police and is to begin serving his 12 year sentence regarding corruption charges. Upon first receiving this sentence, he holed up in the union headquarters, with great support from his supporters. He initially petitioned to have the prison sentence held off until he was elected during the upcoming elections, and could prove his innocence. Though the situation is most likely over, as he has already started the 12 year sentence, his movement has drawn massive support from those who have backed him. When turning himself in, his supporters blocked his car from being able to move, and his backers in Brazilian government have changed their names to include his nickname “Lula”. Though this was done to boycott the court decision and display that it the decision was politically charged, there are several factors that aren’t in favor of Lula’s stance. At a memorial for his late wife, Lula took the opportunity to continue his conspirator rhetoric that he is in fact, innocent. This, undoubtedly, must bring some uncertainty of Lula’s position in the eyes of unbiased onlookers. However the massive support of the populous and several members of government may give the movement some “sustenance” .
