Analysis: Honduras migrants

The large caravan of migrants from Honduras has gotten much attention from Trump and Americans. Trump has described this group as criminals here to bring drugs and a group that should not be allowed into our country, however, this description of the group is far from correct.  This caravan of people, mostly from Honduras, have been fleeing political persecution, corruption, and unrelenting violence after the election of President Juán Orlando Hernández, a conservative U.S. ally. After winning the election, reports of fraud and irregularities surfaced and thousands of Hondurans took to the streets in protest. The government’s response was ruthless. Huffington post reported, “The security forces, long marred by reports of extrajudicial killings, kidnapping and extortion, brutally put down the street protests. At least 22 civilians were killed amid the post-election protests.”  However, despite these reports of numerous human right violations, our own government has continued to see Hernández as one of its closest allies in the region and provided him with millions of dollars in aid to his administration. What’s ironic about this situation is that while Trump continues to denounce this caravan of migrants, he continues to support the very man that is causing these people to flee.
