President Trump has threatened to cut financial aid to Honduras over a large group of migrants. Additionally, Trump warned the countries bordering Honduras, that their funding would also be cut if they allowed migrants to pass through. These migrants are trying to escape corruption, poverty, and violence in Honduras. Instead of the United States helping these people legally migrate, we are shutting them out, and leaving them with no out. The migrants are being deported and are being forced to go back to Honduras. My second article addresses the terrible state of the Nicaraguan government. Nicaraguan citizens are taking a stand and are protesting against their government. Last Sunday, 30 people were detained during an anti-government protest. Protestors did not break any laws, and were wrongfully detained. Protestors were confronted by police with stun grenades. The president of Nicaragua has accused protestors of planning a coup against his democratically elected government and of incitement of violence. The Nicaraguan government is abusing their power and not acting in the best interest of their citizens. My third article talks about Venezuelans taking refuge in Spain. About 200 to 300 families arrive in Spain every week, many end up being held in the airport – because they lack papers. Roles have reversed, Spaniards took refuge in Venezuela in the 1950s. My fourth and final article addressing the election and violence taking place in Brazil. Brazilians are going through the election of a new president, lots of things are swaying the vote. A big deciding factor is the violence in Brazil. There were more than 60,000 killings in 2017. The national rate was up to 30.8 killings per 100,000 people last year. The majority of these killings are against black men and women. Many of the presidential candidates are campaigning on an anti-violence platform. Brazilians are hoping that this election will change their country.
