Lately, there has been a lot of drama coming out of Brazil. Immigrants from other countries like Venezuela, have been feeling to Brazil to try and escape their country’s failing economy. Brazil had been going through an electoral race for president.

But after months of campaigning and drama between the two political groups, Jair Bolsonaro was elected Brazil’s next president. Personally, I don’t think that Jair Bolsonaro wasn’t the best fit for Brazil because of his reputation. There are so many scandals that have been revolved around him, and he was even stabbed by his own people at a campaign rally. But on the other hand, his opponent wasn’t an angel either. Recently, after he was elected, another red flag turned up. People are concerned of Bolsonaro’s plans for the environment. One plan he mentions is that he wants to “weaken the influence of the environmental agency” because he supports the deforestation of the sacred Amazon rainforest.

There was an interview conducted recently with the vice president, Hamilton Mourao. He stated that the Amazon rainforest will be cared for and laws will be applied to help preserve it. This made me very uneasy when I read this because the vice-president says one thing, but the President says another, causing me to think that he doesn’t mean it. In reality the vice president works under the president, so in the end, he really doesn’t have that much of a say. Plus it doesn’t help that Brazil’s politics are so corrupt and unstable, who knows what will happen.

The Amazon rainforest is so critical to the world. Not only is it home to thousands of different types of animals and plants, but it also keeps a clean stable balance of the air we breathe. This forest also limits global warming, which is crucial with all the other pollution in the world right now. If Bolsonaro were to stick to his word and go through with this, it could have a devastating to the world.

I feel that the Brazilians who elected and voted for him didn’t think this through. He stated these comments at a campaign before he was elected. Voters should have reviewed all his plans and ideas, specifically of the rainforest and the environment, because it is so vital. A good president should be trying to preserve the environment instead of destroying it.
