In my first article, “Central American migrants trek north to seek a better life,” it talked about the hardships and struggles that the traveling caravan is facing. These people are walking over 25 miles a day. That is absolutely insane. They are traveling with most of their family that ranges in age. If there is a physical boundary like a river or mountain they have to go through it. They are swimming through rivers with all the supplies they are caring with them or through crazy heat and exhaustion. I’m absolutely amazed and inspired by these people and their willpower to keep going but it also saddens me that they actually have no other option. With their unstable homelands, they needed to escape to find a better life, and if that means traveling in this crazy way, then so be it. It was interesting because it talked about when they have downtime, if they end up at a shelter they bathe, if they have a soccer ball they’ll play with it. They’ll entertain themselves with what they have around them. The article depicts these migrants as people and not monsters, which I respect a lot. It said that people would help carry others children or share what food they have with them from their rations. They are all scared and frustrated too. Most are sleeping on the side of the road and waking up before 3 am so they can travel before the heat gets too difficult to deal with. I wish we learned more about the south and central American immigrants in school. I find it so interesting to learn about others lives and the crazy things they will endure to end up living in another country. It truly makes me think of all the things I take for granted, like my car, and how much these people are struggling to travel.
