Vice President of Ecuador Resigns During Investigation

Vice president, Maria Vicuna, resigned on Tuesday December, 4th. Vicuna’s resigning is in direct correlation to the investigation surrounding her. “Prosecutors are investigating funds that Vicuna received from a former adviser between 2011 and 2013 while she was a legislator for former leftist president Rafael Correa’s Country Alliance (AP) party.” (Cohen, 2018) This is the second Vice president to resign under President Moreno, who only took office in May of 2017. The last Vice president named Jorge Glas, admitted to paying bribes to win out bids on infrastructure with his construction company, Odebrecht. He is currently serving his prison service of 6 years for the roughly 13.5 million dollars he made during the scandal. Vicuna, stated her resigning was to protect herself from the claims, which seems to make her guilty. Looking in from the outside and as an American our political scandals are not nearly as severe as our southern Neighbors. With the Economic Crisis of Venezuela, where a coffee’s price has jumped 285,614% in one year. The caravan coming up North to seek Asylum in Countries like Mexico, Canada, and especially the US, looking for a better life.out of all these South American countries, I was surprised to find that Ecuador had so much corruption. Before reading about the Country I always kinda knew it was there, but I didn’t think much of it. I figured it was a peaceful Country with a latino community and culture that made it a nice vacation spot. Now with my new knowledge, and way of looking at countries both one at a time and how it contributes to it’s allies, I see it in a new light. Corruption is the new definition for South American politics, all the politicians are trying it. Ecuador having lost two vice presidents in a little over a year is crazy, and is not good for the people, and certainly not good for Ecuador’s world image. I honestly don’t know how one would remove corruption, but I guess one way could be remove the source, which might be impossible considering the two cases probably are not connected in anyway. I am excited to see how this all will turn out, I also wonder if the president is involved in any corruption, and if so when will they investigate him. I hope all of this works out because I would really like to visit Ecuador some day.
